New Jersey Beaches – Accessibility and Other Information

NJ has lots of beaches and many locations offer beach wheels, surf chairs, and mobility mats as well as beach taxi’s, Utility Terrain Vehicles or gators for transportation.  This list was compiled with towns, phone numbers and/or websites to help identify possible accessible beaches.  PLEASE NOTE THAT MANY PLACES THAT OFFER THESE SERVICES RECOMMEND OR REQUIRE ADVANCE RESERVATIONS, OR HAVE FORMS TO FILL OUT BEFOREHAND.  This list is not complete, and some information has possibly changed.  If you are interested in a town that is not listed here, please try contacting them directly.  Information about beach accessibility may be listed under various departments (such as Public Works, Recreation or Human Services) or Offices (like Beach Patrol, Beach Operations Headquarters or Disability Services).

Atlantic City – Currently/temporarily, Beach Wheels are supplied through a third party as rentals.  Mobility on Wheels can be reached by phone (toll free) at 855- 484-4454, or at their website www.mobilityonwheels.com.  In the future (not sure when, however) contact Atlantic City Beach Patrol, Steve Downey, Chief, at 609-347- 5312.  There are many streets in Atlantic City that have handicap-access ramps: www.atlanticcitynj.com/explore/beaches-boardwalk/access-facilities/

Monmouth County also has an Accessible Beach Guide, prepared by the Department of Human Services, Division on Aging, Disabilities and Veterans Services. Ocean County information by town:

Brick Township (732-262-1044, Brick Beach I, Brick Beach III and Windward Beach), to reserve a beach wheelchair, call 732-262-1184.  Beach wheelchairs are available on a first come first serve basis.www.bricktownship.net/index.php/departments/recreation/beaches/

Island Beach State Park (Seaside Park) Pavilions are accessible, with ramps to the beach.  To rent Surf Chairs call 732-793-0506. www.nj.gov/dep/parksandforests/parks/islandbeachstatepark.html

Point Pleasant Beach (Jenkinson’s Beach) Contact 732-892-0600 for Surf Chairs information@jenkinsons.com   Surf chairs can also be reserved at Bradshaw’s Beach, Washington Avenue 732-361-2722.  www.pointpleasantbeach.org/  

Lavallette Beach Beach Wheelchairs are available on a first come first serve basis. Contact Lifeguard Headquarters in season at 732-793-2566, off season call Public Works at 732-793-7766. www.lavallette.org/beach/index.html 

Seaside Heights Beach   Reservations for Beach Wheelchairs contact the Visitor’s Center at Blaine Avenue 732-793-4646, or Lifeguard Headquarters at Kearney or Webster Avenues, 732-793-9100.   www.seaside-heightsnj.org  

Long Beach Island (LBI) is comprised of 5 independent towns (Barnegat Light, Beach Haven, Harvey Cedars, Ship Bottom and Surf City) as well as Long Beach Township – which includes the communities of: Beach Haven Crest, Beach Haven Gardens, Beach Haven Inlet, Beach Haven Park, Beach Haven Terrace, Brant Beach, Brighton Beach, High Bar Harbor, Haven Beach, Holgate, Loveladies, North Beach, North Beach Haven, Peahala Park, South Beach Haven, Spray Beach and The Dunes.

     Beach Haven Beach wheel chairs are availablein season from the Beach Patrol Office 609-492-9193, and off season call Public Works at 609-492-2525. www.beachhaven-nj.gov/

     Harvey Cedars Beach Wheel Chairs can be reserved from the Public Works Department at 609-494-6905.  Utility Terrain Vehicles may also be reserved from the Beach Patrol by calling 609-709-0561.  www.harveycedars.org

     Long Beach Township Beach Wheels and Surf Chairs may be reserved from the Long Beach Township Beach Patrol by calling 609-361-1200.  www.longbeachtownship.com

     Ship Bottom Beach Wheels application in season is available from the Beach Patrol at 609-494-9481, and off season from the Clerk’s Office at 609-494-2171, extension 116.  www.shipbottom.org

     Surf City Beach Wheel Chairs can be reserved at 609-361-7655.  Beach Wheel Chairs must be picked up and will not fit in a small car or SUV.  www.surfcitynj.org/beaches/
